Dua (supplication) is the most intimate form of worship in Islam — a direct, private conversation between you and Allah, with no intermediary. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "Dua is the essence of worship" (Tirmidhi), and "Nothing is more honorable to Allah than dua" (Tirmidhi). Whether you are starting your morning, making a life-changing decision, or seeking protection during travel, there is an authentic dua from the Quran and Sunnah for every moment.

"And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell rendered contemptible."

Surah Ghafir (40:60)

Below you will find a carefully curated collection of essential daily duas organized by occasion — morning adhkar, evening adhkar, eating duas, sleep duas, travel dua, dua istikhara, forgiveness, protection, and anxiety and difficulty. Each includes the original Arabic text, transliteration for easy recitation, English translation, and the hadith source. You can also track your daily morning and evening adhkar and dhikr in the Qissah app, or explore Ramadan-specific duas, duas for success, and the Three Quls for daily protection.

Morning Adhkar (Supplications After Fajr)

The morning adhkar are a collection of remembrances the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would recite every morning after Fajr prayer. Reciting them consistently provides spiritual protection, brings barakah to your day, and keeps you connected to Allah from the moment you wake.

Morning Dua (Upon Waking)
Translation: We have entered the morning and at this very time the whole kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is due to Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things capable.
Abu Dawud
When to recite: Every morning after Fajr prayer. This is the foundational morning dua that acknowledges Allah's complete sovereignty over a new day. Starting your day with this supplication is a beautiful way to say good morning through the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet (SAW) would recite this as part of his regular morning routine.
Sayyid al-Istighfar (Master of Forgiveness)
Translation: O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I uphold Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.
Bukhari
When to recite: Every morning and evening. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever recites this with conviction in the morning and dies before the evening, he will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever recites it with conviction in the evening and dies before the morning, he will be among the people of Paradise." This is considered the most comprehensive supplication for seeking forgiveness.
Dua for Protection (Morning)
Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim.
Translation: In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi
When to recite: Three times every morning and evening. The Prophet (SAW) said that whoever recites this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening, nothing will harm them. Uthman ibn Affan (RA) narrated this hadith and was regular in this practice. It is one of the most powerful morning adhkar for daily protection.
Dhikr After Prayer
SubhanAllah (33 times), Alhamdulillah (33 times), Allahu Akbar (34 times).
Translation: Glory be to Allah (33 times). All praise is due to Allah (33 times). Allah is the Greatest (34 times).
Muslim
When to recite: After every obligatory prayer. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever glorifies Allah (SubhanAllah) thirty-three times after every prayer, praises Allah (Alhamdulillah) thirty-three times, and magnifies Allah (Allahu Akbar) thirty-four times — that is ninety-nine — then completes the hundred by saying 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir,' his sins will be forgiven even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea." Track your daily dhikr count in the Qissah app.

Evening Adhkar (Supplications After Maghrib)

The evening adhkar mirror the morning remembrances and are recited after Maghrib prayer or as the evening approaches. They provide spiritual protection through the night and are an essential part of a Muslim's daily routine.

Evening Dua
Translation: We have entered the evening and at this very time the whole kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is due to Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things capable.
Abu Dawud
When to recite: Every evening after Maghrib prayer. This is the evening counterpart to the morning dua, transitioning from "asbahna" (we have entered the morning) to "amsayna" (we have entered the evening). It is part of the core evening adhkar that the Prophet (SAW) would recite daily.
Ayatul Kursi Before Sleep
Translation: Allah — there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Quran 2:255, Bukhari
When to recite: Before going to sleep and after every obligatory prayer. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi when going to bed, Allah will appoint a guardian for him who will stay with him, and no devil will come near him until morning." (Bukhari). Read the full Ayatul Kursi page for more details and virtues.
Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
Amanar-Rasulu bima unzila ilayhi mir-Rabbihi wal-mu'minun.
Translation: The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying: "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say: "We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the final return."
Quran 2:285, Bukhari & Muslim
When to recite: Every night before sleeping. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him." (Bukhari & Muslim). Scholars explain "sufficient" to mean they serve as protection from all evil and harm throughout the night, and some say they are sufficient in reward equivalent to standing the whole night in prayer.

Dua Istikhara (Prayer for Guidance)

Istikhara means "seeking goodness from Allah." It is a sunnah prayer performed when facing an important decision — marriage, career, travel, or any matter where you need divine guidance. The Prophet (SAW) used to teach this dua to the Companions the way he taught them surahs of the Quran.

Dua Istikhara (Full Text)
Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi 'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as'aluka min fadlikal-'adhim, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru wa ta'lamu wa la a'lamu wa anta 'allamul-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra khayrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri — faqdir-hu li wa yassir-hu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri — fasrif-hu 'anni wasrif-ni 'anhu waqdir liyal-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bihi.
Translation: O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. For You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.
Bukhari
When to recite: After praying two voluntary rakah of prayer, when facing any important decision. Where the dua says "this matter" (hadhal-amr), you should think of your specific situation. Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to teach us the istikhara for all matters, as he would teach us a surah of the Quran."

How to Pray Salatul Istikhara

Step 1: Perform wudu (ablution) as you would for any prayer.

Step 2: Pray two voluntary rakah of prayer. You may recite any surah after Al-Fatiha in each rakah.

Step 3: After completing the prayer and saying the taslim (salam), recite the dua istikhara above. When you reach the part about "this matter," think clearly about your specific decision.

Step 4: Trust in Allah and proceed with your decision. The answer does not necessarily come through a dream — rather, Allah will make the best path easy for you and place contentment in your heart, or He will create obstacles to protect you from what is harmful.

Step 5: You may repeat istikhara over several days if you still feel unsure. There is no limit to how many times you can pray it for the same matter.

Dua Qunoot (Witr Prayer Supplication)

Dua Qunoot is recited during the Witr prayer, which is the final prayer of the night. It is a comprehensive supplication asking Allah for guidance, protection, blessings, and refuge from His decree. The Witr prayer is strongly emphasized by the Prophet (SAW) and should not be neglected.

Dua Qunoot
Allahum-mahdina fiman hadayt, wa 'afina fiman 'afayt, wa tawallana fiman tawallayt, wa barik lana fima a'tayt, wa qina sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt.
Translation: O Allah, guide us among those You have guided, pardon us among those You have pardoned, turn to us in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship, and bless us in what You have bestowed, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be disgraced. Glory be to You, our Lord, You are blessed and exalted.
Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud
When to recite: During the Witr prayer — either before or after the ruku (bowing) of the last rakah, depending on your school of thought. The Hanafi school recites qunoot before ruku, while the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools recite it after ruku. Dua qunoot is also recited during times of calamity (Qunoot Nazilah) in the Fajr prayer or other congregational prayers, where the imam may add specific supplications for the Muslim ummah. Dua Safar (Travel Supplication)

Islam has a specific dua for travel (dua safar) that the Prophet (SAW) would recite whenever he embarked on a journey. Traveling is also one of the times when dua is more likely to be accepted, so take advantage of it by making abundant supplications during your trips.

Travel Dua (Dua Safar)
Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
Translation: Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could never have accomplished this by ourselves. And to our Lord is our final return.
Muslim
When to recite: When boarding any mode of transport — car, plane, bus, train, or ship — at the beginning of any journey. This verse is from Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:13-14). The Prophet (SAW) would say "Allahu Akbar" three times, then recite this dua, then add: "O Allah, we ask You in this journey for righteousness, taqwa, and deeds that You are pleased with. O Allah, ease this journey for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Guardian of the family." The dua of a traveler is among those that are not rejected.

Dua Before Sleeping

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had a beautiful routine before going to sleep, which included specific duas and remembrances. Reciting these supplications before bed brings protection through the night and ensures that if one passes away in their sleep, they do so upon the fitrah (natural state of faith).

Dua Before Sleep
Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.
Translation: In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.
Bukhari
When to recite: When lying down to sleep. The Prophet (SAW) compared sleep to a minor death, as the soul departs during sleep and returns upon waking. This concise yet profound dua entrusts your life and death entirely to Allah. When waking up, the Prophet (SAW) would say: "Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur" — All praise is due to Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection. Combine this with Ayatul Kursi and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah for complete nighttime protection.
Dua for Protection While Sleeping
Allahumma inni a'udhu bi wajhikal-karimi wa kalimatikattammati min sharri ma anta akhidhun bi nasiyatihi.
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in Your Noble Face and Your perfect Words from the evil of that which You hold by its forelock. O Allah, You remove burden and sin. O Allah, Your army is never defeated, Your promise is never broken, and the wealth of the wealthy cannot benefit them against You. Glory be to You and praise.
Abu Dawud
When to recite: Before going to sleep. This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's complete protection through the night. The Prophet (SAW) would pair this with reciting Surah Al-Mulk, the Three Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas), and Ayatul Kursi as part of his complete nighttime routine.

Duas for Eating (Before & After Meals)

Islam teaches mindfulness in every act, including eating. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had specific duas for before and after meals, transforming the simple act of eating into an act of worship and gratitude.

Dua Before Eating
Bismillahi wa 'ala barakatillah.
Translation: In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah.
Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi
When to recite: Before starting any meal or snack. The Prophet (SAW) said: "When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, let him say: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end)." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi). Saying Bismillah before eating is a sunnah that brings barakah (blessing) to the food and prevents shaytan from sharing in the meal.
Dua After Eating
Translation: All praise is due to Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any power or might from me.
Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud
When to recite: Immediately after finishing a meal. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "Whoever eats food and then says this dua, his past sins will be forgiven." (Tirmidhi). This beautiful supplication acknowledges that every morsel of food is a gift and provision from Allah alone, and that we have no power to feed ourselves without His grace. It is one of the simplest yet most rewarding daily duas.

Duas for Forgiveness (Istighfar)

Seeking forgiveness is one of the most beloved acts of worship to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would seek Allah's forgiveness over 70 times a day, despite being sinless. Istighfar purifies the heart, erases sins, and opens the doors of provision and relief.

Comprehensive Istighfar
Rabbighfir li wa tub 'alayya innaka antat-Tawwabur-Rahim.
Translation: My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful.
Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi
When to recite: At any time, especially after committing a sin or feeling distant from Allah. Ibn Umar (RA) reported that they would count the Prophet (SAW) saying this dua 100 times in a single gathering. The name At-Tawwab means "The One who constantly turns in forgiveness" — Allah not only forgives but also loves to forgive. Pair this with the Sayyid al-Istighfar for comprehensive daily forgiveness.
Dua of Prophet Adam (AS)
Rabbana dhalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakoonanna minal-khasirin.
Translation: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.
Quran 7:23
When to recite: When seeking forgiveness after a mistake or sin. This is the very first dua of repentance in human history — the supplication Prophet Adam and Hawwa (Eve) made to Allah after eating from the forbidden tree. Allah accepted their repentance, demonstrating His infinite mercy. This Quranic dua teaches us that acknowledging our mistakes before Allah, with humility and sincerity, is the path to forgiveness. Learn more about this story in our Story of Prophet Adam.

Duas for Protection

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught numerous supplications for seeking Allah's protection from all forms of harm — physical, spiritual, and unseen. These powerful duas form a shield around the believer when recited with conviction and consistency.

Dua for Complete Protection
A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.
Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created.
Muslim
When to recite: When arriving at a new place, before sleeping, or at any time you feel the need for protection. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever stops at a place and says this dua, nothing will harm him until he leaves that place." (Muslim). This is especially recommended when traveling, entering a hotel, or staying somewhere unfamiliar. It is a concise yet immensely powerful supplication. For additional protection, recite the Three Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas) three times each.
Dua for Protection from All Harm
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa min sharri ma lam a'mal.
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done and from the evil of what I have not done.
Muslim
When to recite: As part of your daily morning and evening adhkar. This dua is uniquely comprehensive — it seeks protection not only from the consequences of our own actions but also from external harm that we have no control over. The Prophet (SAW) regularly included this in his supplications, teaching us to seek refuge from both known and unknown sources of harm. It reminds us of our complete dependence on Allah for safety.

Duas for Anxiety, Stress & Difficulty

Islam provides powerful supplications for times of worry, grief, and hardship. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself experienced immense trials and taught his companions specific duas to turn to Allah during their most difficult moments. These duas bring peace to the heart and remind us that relief comes only from Allah.

Dua of Prophet Yunus (AS) for Distress
La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minadh-dhalimin.
Translation: There is no god but You, glory be to You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.
Quran 21:87, Tirmidhi
When to recite: During any moment of distress, anxiety, grief, or difficulty. This is the dua Prophet Yunus (AS) made from inside the belly of the whale — in complete darkness and seemingly hopeless circumstances. Allah says: "So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers." (Quran 21:88). The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "No Muslim makes dua with this supplication for anything except that Allah answers him." (Tirmidhi). Read the full story in our Story of Prophet Yunus.
Dua for Worry and Grief
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from inability and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of people.
Bukhari
When to recite: Whenever you feel overwhelmed by worry, anxiety, sadness, or the pressures of life. Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to recite this dua frequently. It is remarkable in its comprehensiveness — it covers internal struggles (worry, grief, laziness), character weaknesses (miserliness, cowardice), and external pressures (debt, being overpowered). This dua is a complete prescription for the struggles every human faces. Pair it with the dua for success when working through challenges.
Dua for Ease After Hardship
Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil.
Translation: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.
Quran 3:173, Bukhari
When to recite: In any situation where you feel overwhelmed, threatened, or tested beyond your capacity. This was the dua of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) when he was thrown into the fire, and the dua of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions when they were told their enemies had gathered against them. Instead of fear, they said these words and "returned with grace and bounty from Allah, and no harm touched them" (Quran 3:174). This short yet powerful phrase is a declaration of complete trust in Allah as your protector and guardian. Learn more about this story in the Story of Prophet Ibrahim.

How to Make Your Duas More Effective

  • Begin with praise and salawat: Start your dua by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The Prophet (SAW) said: "Every dua is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet." (Al-Bayhaqi)
  • Face the Qiblah: While not obligatory, turning towards the Qiblah when making dua is from the sunnah and shows respect and attentiveness.
  • Raise your hands: The Prophet (SAW) said: "Your Lord is Kind and Generous, and is shy to turn away the hands of His servant empty when he raises them to Him." (Abu Dawud)
  • Use the Names of Allah: Call upon Allah by His beautiful 99 Names that relate to your request — Ar-Razzaq (The Provider) when asking for provision, Ash-Shafi (The Healer) when asking for health.
  • Be specific and sincere: Ask with clarity and full conviction that Allah will answer. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Call upon Allah while being certain of being answered." (Tirmidhi)
  • Choose the best times: The last third of the night, during sujood, between adhan and iqamah, while fasting before iftar, on Fridays, and while traveling — these are all times when duas are more likely to be accepted.
  • Make dua for others: When you make dua for your fellow Muslim in their absence, an angel says "Ameen, and for you the same." Your selfless dua benefits both you and the one you pray for.
  • Be patient and persistent: Do not give up if your dua is not answered immediately. The Prophet (SAW) said: "The supplication of every one of you is granted if he does not grow impatient." (Bukhari & Muslim)

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about duas and daily supplications

What is dua in Islam and why is it important?

Dua (supplication) is the act of calling upon Allah directly, asking Him for guidance, forgiveness, provision, or any need. It is considered the essence of worship in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "Dua is the essence of worship" (Tirmidhi) and "Nothing is more honorable to Allah than dua" (Tirmidhi). Unlike formal salah (prayer), dua can be made at any time, in any language, and in any position. Allah promises in the Quran: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (40:60). Every sincere dua is answered — either by granting it, averting harm, or storing the reward for the Hereafter.

What are the best times to make dua for it to be accepted?

Several times are especially recommended for making dua: the last third of the night (before Fajr) when Allah descends to the lowest heaven, during sujood (prostration) in prayer, between the adhan and iqamah, while fasting just before iftar, on Fridays (especially the last hour before Maghrib), during rain, while traveling, and on the Day of Arafah. The Prophet (SAW) said: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is during sujood, so increase your dua therein." (Muslim). Making dua consistently at these blessed times increases the likelihood of acceptance.

What dua should I say before and after eating?

Before eating, say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah). If you forget to say it at the beginning, say "Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi" (In the name of Allah at its beginning and end). After eating, say "Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah" (Praise be to Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any power or might from me). The Prophet (SAW) said that whoever says this after eating will have their past sins forgiven (Tirmidhi). You can find the full Arabic text and transliteration in our eating duas section above.

What is the most powerful dua for anxiety and stress in Islam?

One of the most powerful duas for anxiety is the dua of Prophet Yunus (AS): "La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minadh-dhalimin" (There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I was among the wrongdoers). Allah says in the Quran that He responded to Yunus and saved him from distress, and "thus do We save the believers" (21:87-88). Another key dua is: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan" (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief), which the Prophet (SAW) would recite regularly. Both are found with full Arabic text in our anxiety and difficulty section.

How do you pray Salatul Istikhara for guidance?

Salatul Istikhara is a two-rakah prayer performed when seeking Allah's guidance on a specific decision such as marriage, career, or travel. First, perform wudu (ablution), then pray two voluntary rakah of prayer. After completing the salah and saying the taslim (salam), recite the dua istikhara, thinking of your specific situation where the dua says "this matter." The prayer can be performed at any time except the three prohibited times. After praying istikhara, proceed with your decision and trust in Allah's plan — the answer comes through ease or difficulty in the matter, not necessarily through dreams. You may repeat it over several days if still unsure.
