The Importance of Morning and Evening Adhkar in Islam

Morning and evening adhkar are among the most powerful daily practices a Muslim can maintain. Allah says in the Quran: "O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon." (Quran 33:41-42)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never missed his morning and evening adhkar. These supplications serve as a spiritual shield, protecting the believer from harm, evil eye, and the whispers of Shaytan. They bring peace to the heart, barakah to the day, and draw the servant closer to Allah.

Abdullah ibn Khubaib reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Recite Qul Huwallahu Ahad and the two Mu'awwidhatayn (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) three times in the morning and evening; they will suffice you against everything." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

Morning Adhkar (Adhkar al-Sabah)

Recite these after Fajr prayer until sunrise for protection and blessings throughout your day.

Ayatul Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum, la ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm, lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard...

Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

1 time - Whoever recites it in the morning will be protected until evening (An-Nasa'i)

آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِما أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Last 2 Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)

Surah Al-Falaq (113)

Qul a'udhu bi Rabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

Best Time for Morning and Evening Adhkar

Morning Adhkar (Adhkar al-Sabah)

The optimal time for reciting morning adhkar is after Fajr prayer until sunrise. This period is especially blessed, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to sit in his place of prayer after Fajr until the sun had risen, engaging in the remembrance of Allah.

The Arabic word "sabah" (morning) in Islamic context refers to the time between Fajr and sunrise. If you miss this window, most scholars say you can still recite them until the time of Dhuhr, though the full reward is in the prescribed time.

Evening Adhkar (Adhkar al-Masa)

The optimal time for reciting evening adhkar is after Asr prayer until Maghrib (sunset). This is the strongest scholarly opinion, as "masa" (evening) in the Quranic context refers to the late afternoon period.

Some scholars extend the evening period from Maghrib until the first third of the night. The key is consistency rather than perfection in timing. It is better to recite them slightly outside the optimal window than to skip them entirely.

Practical Tips for Consistency

  • Set a daily reminder: Use the Qissah app to get prayer time notifications that remind you to recite your adhkar
  • Start small: Begin with the most important adhkar and gradually add more
  • Keep it accessible: Have the adhkar on your phone so you can read them anywhere
  • Understand the meaning: When you know what you are saying, it strengthens your connection with Allah
  • Be patient: Building a habit takes time; aim for consistency over perfection

Benefits of Regular Morning & Evening Adhkar

The Quran and Sunnah mention numerous spiritual and worldly benefits of maintaining daily adhkar.

🛡

Divine Protection

Morning and evening adhkar form a spiritual shield against harm, evil eye, black magic, and the whispers of Shaytan. The Prophet said whoever recites Ayatul Kursi in the morning is protected until evening.

💖

Peace of Heart

Allah says: "Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (13:28). Regular adhkar calms anxiety, reduces stress, and fills the heart with tranquility and contentment.

🌟

Forgiveness of Sins

Many adhkar carry the promise of sin forgiveness. Saying "SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi" 100 times causes sins to be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.

🌱

Trees in Paradise

The Prophet said: "Whoever says 'SubhanAllah' — a tree is planted for him in Paradise." Regular adhkar build your eternal garden in Jannah with every utterance.
