The 5 Daily Prayers in Islam

Salah (prayer) is the second pillar of Islam and the most important act of worship after the declaration of faith. Allah commands in the Quran: "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." (Quran 4:103)

Muslims pray five times daily -- at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night. These prayers serve as a direct connection between the servant and Allah, purifying the soul and structuring the day around remembrance of the Creator. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The first thing a person will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment is prayer." (Abu Dawud)

Each prayer has a specific time window determined by the position of the sun, making prayer times vary by location and season. Understanding these times is essential for every Muslim.

The Five Obligatory Prayers

Each prayer is a unique spiritual experience with its own time, characteristics, and virtues.

🌅

Fajr - The Dawn Prayer

Time: From true dawn (first light on the horizon) until just before sunrise.

Obligatory Rakats: 2

Sunnah Rakats: 2 before (strongly emphasized)

Significance: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever prays the Fajr prayer is under the protection of Allah." (Muslim). The two Sunnah rakats before Fajr are "better than the world and everything in it." (Muslim). Fajr is the prayer that distinguishes the believers from the hypocrites.

☀️

Dhuhr - The Noon Prayer

Time: After the sun passes its highest point (zenith) until the shadow of an object equals its length.

Obligatory Rakats: 4

Sunnah Rakats: 4 before + 2 after

Significance: The midday prayer helps the believer pause and reconnect with Allah during the busiest part of the day. On Fridays, Dhuhr is replaced by Jumu'ah (Friday congregational prayer) which consists of 2 rakats preceded by a khutbah (sermon).

🌤️

Asr - The Afternoon Prayer

Time: When an object's shadow equals its length (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali) or twice its length (Hanafi) until sunset.

Obligatory Rakats: 4

Sunnah Rakats: None confirmed (some scholars recommend 4 before)

Significance: Allah swears by the time of Asr in Surah Al-Asr. The Prophet said: "Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he lost his family and property." (Al-Bukhari). This is also known as the "middle prayer" referenced in Quran 2:238.

🌇

Maghrib - The Sunset Prayer

Time: Immediately after sunset until the red twilight (afterglow) disappears.

Obligatory Rakats: 3

Sunnah Rakats: 2 after

Significance: Maghrib has the shortest prayer window of all five prayers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to hasten to pray Maghrib as soon as the sun set. It marks the beginning of the Islamic day (the new day starts at Maghrib in the Islamic calendar).

🌙

Isha - The Night Prayer

Time: After the red twilight disappears until the middle of the night (or until Fajr in necessity).

Obligatory Rakats: 4

Sunnah Rakats: 2 after + Witr (1 or 3 rakats, strongly recommended)

Significance: The Prophet said: "Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as if he has prayed half the night. And whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he has prayed the entire night." (Muslim). Isha is followed by the Witr prayer, which the Prophet never missed.

How Islamic Prayer Times Are Calculated

Islamic prayer times are determined by the position of the sun relative to the observer's location on Earth. Because the sun's position changes throughout the year and varies by geographic location, prayer times are different every day and in every city.

Sun Position and Each Prayer

  • Fajr: Begins when the first light of dawn appears on the horizon (astronomical twilight). Most calculation methods define this as when the sun is 15-19.5 degrees below the horizon, depending on the convention used.
  • Dhuhr: Begins a few minutes after the sun reaches its highest point in the sky (solar noon/zenith). This is the easiest to calculate as it corresponds directly to the sun's transit.
  • Asr: Begins when the shadow of an object equals its own length plus the length of its shadow at noon. The Hanafi school uses a ratio of 2:1 (shadow equals twice the object's length), resulting in a later Asr time.
  • Maghrib: Begins immediately when the sun dips below the horizon (sunset). This is the most straightforward calculation.
  • Isha: Begins when the red afterglow on the western horizon disappears. Most methods define this as when the sun is 15-18 degrees below the horizon.

Hanafi vs. Shafi'i Asr Calculation

The primary difference in prayer time calculations between the major schools of thought is for Asr prayer:

  • Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali: Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its own length (plus the shadow at zenith). This results in an earlier Asr time.
  • Hanafi: Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals twice its own length (plus the shadow at zenith). This results in a later Asr time, typically 30-60 minutes after the standard calculation.

Major Calculation Conventions

Different Islamic organizations use slightly different sun angles for Fajr and Isha, resulting in variations of a few minutes:

  • Muslim World League (MWL): Fajr at 18 degrees, Isha at 17 degrees
  • ISNA (Islamic Society of North America): Fajr at 15 degrees, Isha at 15 degrees
  • Egyptian General Authority: Fajr at 19.5 degrees, Isha at 17.5 degrees
  • Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia): Fajr at 18.5 degrees, Isha fixed at 90 minutes after Maghrib
  • University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: Fajr at 18 degrees, Isha at 18 degrees

Sunnah Prayers (Rawatib)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regularly prayed additional voluntary prayers before and after the obligatory prayers. These are known as Rawatib.

صَلاةُ الْفَجْرِ

Before Fajr

2 Rakats Sunnah Mu'akkadah (strongly emphasized)

"The two rakats of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it." (Muslim)

صَلاةُ الظُّهْرِ

Before & After Dhuhr

4 Rakats before + 2 Rakats after

"Whoever preserves 4 rakats before Dhuhr and 4 after, Allah makes him forbidden for the Fire." (Tirmidhi)

صَلاةُ الْمَغْرِبِ

After Maghrib

2 Rakats Sunnah Mu'akkadah

The Prophet never left the 2 Sunnah rakats after Maghrib, even while traveling. (Al-Bukhari)

صَلاةُ الْعِشَاءِ

After Isha

2 Rakats Sunnah + Witr (1 or 3 Rakats)

"Make Witr the last of your night prayers." (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

صَلاةُ الضُّحَى

Duha Prayer (Mid-Morning)

2-8 Rakats, 15 minutes after sunrise until before Dhuhr

"Every morning, charity is due on every joint. Two rakats of Duha suffice for this." (Muslim)

صَلاةُ اللَّيْلِ

Tahajjud / Qiyam al-Layl

2-11 Rakats, last third of the night

"The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer." (Muslim)

The Prophet said: "Whoever prays 12 Sunnah rakats in a day, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise." (Muslim) These 12 rakats are: 2 before Fajr, 4 before Dhuhr, 2 after Dhuhr, 2 after Maghrib, and 2 after Isha.

Frequently Asked Questions About Islamic Prayer Times

What time is Fajr?

Fajr prayer time begins at the break of true dawn (when a horizontal line of light appears across the horizon) and ends just before sunrise. The exact time varies by location and season. In most cities, Fajr is typically between 4:00 AM and 6:30 AM. Use a prayer times app like Qissah for accurate Fajr times based on your GPS location.

How many prayers are there in Islam?

There are 5 obligatory (fard) daily prayers in Islam: Fajr (dawn, 2 rakats), Dhuhr (noon, 4 rakats), Asr (afternoon, 4 rakats), Maghrib (sunset, 3 rakats), and Isha (night, 4 rakats). This totals 17 obligatory rakats per day. Additionally, there are recommended Sunnah prayers (rawatib) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regularly performed before and after the obligatory prayers.

What happens if I miss a prayer?

If you miss an obligatory prayer, you should make it up (qada) as soon as you remember. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers it." (Al-Bukhari, Muslim). Missing prayers intentionally is a serious matter in Islam, but Allah is the Most Merciful -- repent sincerely, make up the missed prayer, and strive not to miss again.

What is Qiyam al-Layl?

Qiyam al-Layl (the Night Prayer, also known as Tahajjud) is a voluntary prayer performed during the last third of the night, after Isha and before Fajr. It is one of the most virtuous voluntary acts of worship. Allah says: "And from the night, pray with it as additional worship for you; it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station." (Quran 17:79). The minimum is 2 rakats and there is no maximum, though the Prophet typically prayed 11 rakats.

How are prayer times calculated?

Islamic prayer times are calculated based on the position of the sun relative to the observer's location. Fajr begins at true dawn (sun 18 degrees below horizon for most conventions). Dhuhr begins when the sun passes its zenith. Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its length (Shafi'i) or twice its length (Hanafi). Maghrib begins at sunset. Isha begins when the red twilight disappears (sun 17-18 degrees below horizon). Different organizations like ISNA, MWL, Egyptian General Authority, and Umm al-Qura use slightly different angles.
